A denture or a complete denture as it is often called, is an appliance that is inserted in the mouth, replaces natural teeth and provides support for the cheeks and lips.
Most dentures are made of acrylic and can be fabricated two different ways.
- A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed.
- An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture.
- An upper denture has acrylic, usually flesh colored, that covers the palate (roof of the mouth).
- A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue.
The teeth are made of plastic, porcelain or a combination of both. Dentures can be fabricated to fit over endodontically treated teeth and a complete denture can be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure fit of the appliance.
Dentures over a normal course of time will wear and need to be replaced or relined in order to keep the jaw alignment normal. The alignment will slowly change as the bone and gum ridges recede or shrink due to the extraction of the teeth. Regular dental examinations are still important for the denture wearer so that the oral tissues can be checked for disease or change.

It has been over 10 years since I went to the dentist, and I knew an appointment was needed. I was thinking about the dentist so much that I was having nightmares that a tooth fell out and I would wake up and feel around my mouth with my tongue to make sure I still had all my teeth. Now I have been going to Thompson Dental for over 15 years. The entire staff and Dr Thompson are wonderful. The Hygienist Jessie that does my cleaning is very knowledgeable and explains the purpose of the visit. For example, besides the usual cleaning I also may have x-rays, gum pocket depth, visit from Dr. Thompson and so on planned. When there is an issue Jessie takes a picture of tooth and shows it on the monitor to explain the overall situation. That is great communication for me to understand better when I did not even ask her to. The care and cleaning I get is astounding. I even like going to the dentist besides getting off from work, but my mouth feels refreshed.

Do dentures hurt?

How long do dentures last?
With proper care, dentures generally last several years, but they don’t last forever. Over time the bone and gum ridges change shape, so dentures will eventually need to be relined or replaced to maintain a proper fit. Regular dental exams help us monitor the fit and your oral health.
What’s the difference between immediate and conventional dentures?
A conventional denture is made after your teeth have been extracted and the gums have healed, which means a period of time without teeth. An immediate denture is placed right after extraction so you’re not without teeth during healing, though it may require more adjustments as your gums change shape. We can help you decide which option fits your situation.
Can dentures be made more secure?
